Wild Coast Tented Lodge - Yala

Where the Indian Ocean meets the Jungle... Resplendent Ceylon’s latest creation is Wild Coast Tented Lodge, adjacent to the world famous Yala National Park, renowned for its dense leopard population. This spectacular luxury tented camp is situated in a stunning location where the jungle meets a rugged, empty beach, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Wild Coast Lodge’s unique design, masterminded by Nomadic Resorts, a consortium of Dutch, English and Sri Lankan designers, sees the man-made structures blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape thanks to the use of carefully selected natural materials.

The use of arched fabric structures allows each of the 28 tents to take on the shape and colour of the rocks and boulders that lay scattered nearby, whilst a clever layout in the shape of a leopard’s paw print alludes to the area’s most famous resident. While our main buildings, made of bamboo, blend in with the distinctive rock formations of Yala, our uniquely shaped tents, called Cocoons & Urchins, truly represent a luxury five star resort room under canvas, offering state-of-the art amenities including air-conditioning. The open-air bamboo-clad Ten Tuskers bar and Dining Pavilion – designed to mirror the boulders scattered across the golden beach beyond – wrap around the resort’s enormous free-form swimming pool. Guests can enjoy creative daily-changing menus of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine in the restaurant, as well as sundowner cocktails and picnics al fresco on the sand dunes, watching dusk settle over the Indian Ocean.

Thotalagala Hotel - Haputale

Hillside tea-planter’s bungalow turned boutique hotel Thotalagala is a colonial-style, seven-room stay, decorated with original 19th-century furnishings and odes to the heritage of Sri Lankan Hill Country. Take alfresco breakfasts on the emerald-green lawn and look out over rolling tea plantations as you nibble baked goods and sip locally grown tea; in the evenings, dine in old-world splendour at the long antique dining table. Spend your days exploring the grounds, climbing up to nearby Lipton’s Seat, or simply lounging on the cream-coloured sofas in-between tea times.

Each of the seven rooms is individually decorated with antique furnishings – a roll-top desk here, an artfully arranged taxonomy of fragrant plants there – and named after a historical figure with a tea-country connection. We especially like the stunning four-poster bed in the Rev Walter Senior room.

The Kandy House - Kandy

Seductive boutique hotel The Kandy House, in Kandy’s leafy outskirts, effortlessly purveys intimate luxury. A 200-year-old aristo palazzo gone 21st-century, it blends minimalist lines, atypical antiques and quirky strokes of colour around a central courtyard, with just eight romantic individually designed rooms, named after indigenous butterflies. If you can bear to leave the genial grub and your chaise longue on the veranda, enticing hammocks beckon for ginning and sinning around the infinity pool. For romantics, Deluxe room the Pioneer (though small and sans bath tub) is nearest the infinity pool and has its own veranda and garden with a hammock. We also love Ultra room Indian Admiral, which sports an original mahogany veranda with French café table. You may need high-jump skills to access the ancestral four-poster, but you can recover afterwards in the claw-foot bath-with-a-view. Ultra room Red Spot Duke will bring the scarlet harlot out in anyone, with a shiny metal bathroom and cane chaise longue on the wraparound veranda.

Cape Weligama

Luxury resort Cape Weligama, on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, follows in sister hotel Ceylon Tea Trails’ footsteps as one of the island’s most wanted. Laid out village-style over an Indian Ocean headland, each butler-attended contemporary villa – designed by architect Lek Bunnag – sits within a flower-scented watta (garden), steps from a cooling pool. Bays and beaches are a short meander away, and the crescent-shaped, cliff-edge infinity pool has swoonsome panoramas.
The two-storey 307sq m two-bedroom Cape Pool Villa will suit privacy-seekers with a blow-out budget. Upping the ante for honeymoon romance, they have sweeping Indian Ocean views from both bedrooms, and this is the only category with a private infinity pool on the roof terrace. However, Master Suites are more intimate and cost-effective, flaunting the same ochre and ultramarine-hued style as larger villas.
